Canyoning in the Gardens of Stone – Photo Essay

The Gardens of Stone is a superb natural area on the western side of the Blue Mountains. Part of the area is protected by national park but a lot of it is not. Our weekend visit took us to places in the national park and places out of it.

It is a good area for canyoning, and in particular, a good place for canyoning at this time of the year as many of the canyons are dry. This was just as well – for we had a quite cool weekend. Low temperatures and a strong icy wind. In between the canyons, we camped on the rim of the Wolgan Valley. This provided great views and plenty of photo opportunities amongst the delicate rock formations on top of the cliffs.

More photos of mine from the trip can be found here. Albert has some photos on Picasa here and here.

Looks like a nice trip. Almost makes me wish I was still in Sydney. Almost, but not. Anyway, there is a typo “canhyoning” above.

Hi Dave, nice post. I especially like the framing of Albear by the chamber and the dog/dragon rock against the sun. I think you mean superb in the first sentence. Cheers

Hi Dave, done some walks in the Gardens of Stone, Pantoneys, Newnes area etc. Planning to do Donkey Mountain soon. Love to know where this walk was, if you’d care to share that info. The acoustic caverns look fabulous. Col

Its a very delicate area so I will not provide grid references but it is Gardens of Stone and on the south side of the Wolgan. Lots of interesting country out that way – well worth exploring
