The SUBW Xmas Walk to the Coxs River – 15-16 December 2012

A walk to a nice campsite on the Coxs River is a fixture on the SUBW program. It is held on a weekend a little before Xmas each year. This year Ash Burke organised the weekend. For many in the party – the weekend started with a trip through the Grand Canyon at Blackheath (see previous blog post). Then we headed down to Megalong Valley and set off along the Six Foot Track for the Coxs River.

The walk to the campsite only takes about an hour.

We arrived in the late afternoon and then after setting up tents and tarps we headed to the river to cool off. There is a large swimming hole right at the campsite.

From year to year it varies in depth. Water enters the pool via a rapid – which can also vary from a wild surging torrent (like last year) to barely a trickle(eg 2006). This year the river was fairly low – but still flowing nicely.

This stretch of the river – with its beautifully sculptured granite is a marvellous place to wander around taking photographs. But it is a place I have visited quite regularly over the years and it is always a challenge to try and get photographs at least as good as the ones from the previous year.

As well as the photo-pfaffing, its a good chance to catch up with friends. Many old SUBW members and other friends of the club turn up.

A larger set of photos can be view on my website here.

Old friends, Tom and Carole stay very still for this long exposure of the rapid
