Tawny Frogmouths on the Cooks River 1-2 November 2016

Two years ago, there were two separate families of Tawny Frogmouths, living in the trees alongside the Cooks River. Both the families were two adults and two chicks. I didn’t see any last year. But, this year, there are again two families, as before. Each with two adults and two chicks.

I was fortunate to photograph them.

On my first visit, I only photographed one of the sets of birds. Then I heard there was a second set, a little further upstream. So, I went along the river the next morning and quickly found that second family. They were higher in a tree and harder to photograph –

If you want to learn more about Tawny Frogmouths, then there is a good podcast you can download or listen online from ABC Radio.

Here, you can see a pelican take off and then crash land into the river – head first!

And some other wildlife –

All the photos were taken along the Cooks River between Canterbury and Botany Bay and the two wetland areas at Cup and Saucer Creek and Tempe Wetlands.
