Whungee Wheengee Canyon – 10 December 2015

This was another very pleasant mid week canyoning trip with Bob. we headed up to Mt Wilson on what was a quite hot day – perfect for a cold canyon like Whungee Wheengee.

We walked out along the fire trail and then took the track down to the Wollangambe River, then up on the other side. This is easy walking – but it was hot in the sun with little shade post bushfires.

It took a little over 90 minutes to reach the abseil into the canyon. We descended, then walked down the creek a short distance to the start of the canyon.

It was nice, at first, to cool off in the canyon. The creek was cold and clear and very beautiful. In some of the darker sections we could see glow worms. I stopped in a few places for photos – but the light was not real great for canyon photography. Also – this is one canyon that you want to keep moving in, otherwise you can start to feel too cold.

You have to be careful as you proceed down the canyon. There are plenty of tricky short drops that require a bit of caution.

Lower down, we did the two short abseils and dropped into the last lower part of the canyon, and then it was not far to emerge into the Greg Section of Wollangambe Canyon.

We stopped near the junction for lunch, and then rather than continue down Wollangambe Canyon, we took the direct exit and climbed out onto the ridge. Again – it was very hot in the direct rays of the sun on the burnt out ridge.

The rest of the walk back to the car was not too bad, made more interesting by spotting some nice orchids in flower.
