National Pass – Bushwalk

After visiting Empress Canyon, we did a walk along the excellent and spectacular National Pass at Wentworth Falls. This track starts at the bottom of Empress Canyon at the Valley of the Waters and then follows the half-way ledge to Wentworth Falls.

The half-way ledge is on a thin layer of shale between the two massive sandstone layers (the Burra-Moko later at the bottom, and the Banks Wall layer above) that make up the Narrabeen Sandstone of the Blue Mountains. There are few places were a negotiable route can be made along the half way ledge. It is often too steep or very loose. The Wentworth Falls ledge does connect up right the way along which makes for a very nice walk. Also – the track is very well maintained. Like the Grand Canyon track – it is also a National Parks showpiece walk.

At Wentworth Falls the track crosses between the lower and higher falls. This is a good place to look out for the Dwarf Mountain pines which cling to the rock face near the falls in the spray zone. Then the track climbs up steeply to the top of the falls. We returned via the Undercliff Track .
