Menai Nature Walk – 23 October 2015

Digi Dave had organised a nature walk around parts of the greater Menai area. On our excursion, we were lucky to be guided by Dave’s sister, Pam, her husband Greg, and their friend Lloyd, a local expert from the Menai Wildflower Group.

The first area we investigated had a large colony of Flying Duck Orchids. Lloyd had fears they may no longer be out, but we soon found some, and then were staggered by the number that were out. Quite an amazing spectacle.

Off the plateau, in a sheltered valley, we next saw a pair of powerful owls together with their two, by now, quite large chicks. They were sitting high up in a tree and a bit hard to photograph. It was quite special to see these large birds. Nearby we spotted some more orchids out.

We then looked around for another pair of powerful owls in the area. Greg spotted them – also high up a group of trees. They too had two quite large chicks.

On the way back, we were fortunate to see more orchids – this time some Dockrillia linguiformis.

This was a great day out – many thanks to our guides – Lloyd, Greg and Pam.

More photos from the day are on my website here.
