This was another excellent excursion to visit Sassafras Gully at Springwood to check out the fungi and with a secondary aim of looking for orchids and photographing some of the bird life.
I entered via the Sassafras Gully track and walked down to The Lagoon at Glenbrook Creek, where I had a swim. Then I continued down to the Magdala Creek junction and walked back to Springwood via Magdala Creek.
I will start with some of the fungi that I observed.
Sanguinoderma rude
Gomphus sp.
I saw two of these Gomphus growing on a dirt bank where I usually see it each season. When small, it seems to exude blue droplets and bruises blue. I have only observed it in two locations – here in Sassafras Gully and at one spot in Birdwood Gully. I had recently observed it coming up at the Birdwood Gully location.
I am not sure what this one is –
Slime Mould
Ramaria sp.
Trogia sp.
Omphalotus nidiformis
One whole dead tree was covered in this fungus. It is the same tree that I observed it on a few years ago.
Hygrocybe miniata
Ophiocordyceps robertsii
Macrotyphula juncea
Microglossum viride
Entoloma sp.
I had seen a lot more of this light blue species on my previous visit.
And some more Hygrocybe miniata –
This one was seen on Magdala Creek – Cantherellus sp.
And for some of the birds.
Golden Whistler
Rufous Fantail
White-throated Treecreeper
Grey Fantail
Variegated Fairy-wrens
Striated Thornbill
Eastern Yellow Robin
Boobook Owl
And some orchids –
Bonnet Orchid (Cryptostylis erecta)
Chilloglottis sp.
Bonnet Orchid (Cryptostylis erecta)
Higher up Magdala Creek I was looking for fungi but the main species I saw was a lot of Clavulinopsis sulcata –
