Lions Head – Kedumba Walk – 25 June 2014

Bob was keen on a daywalk in the Blue Mountains. Forecast strong winds limited our options a bit, but we eventually decided on a walk out to Lions Head off Kings Tableland and then down the pass to the old Kedumba Farm (Now Kedumba Campground). From there we intended to walk out via Kedumba Pass or the nearby Goat Track Pass.

It is easy walking out to Lions Head, and there are great views of Mt Solitary, the Kedumba Valley and much of the Greater Southern Blue Mountains as well. The cold strong wind meant however that we didn’t tarry too long enjoying the views.

The pass off Lions Head descends through a break in the cliffs a short way back from the actual end point of the headland. At the top is a large cairn and logbook.

Then it is an easy climb down, following a vague track, which disappears when you reach open slopes below. Then more easy walking down to pick up the open paddocks of Kedumba. On the way you can walk along or cross some old farm roads – some quite overgrown.

Lots of kangaroos were grazing at the Kedumba Campground. It was nice and sunny and being in the valley – well sheltered from the wind. After inspecting the campground, we walked to look at the nearby slab hut. This has an interesting history. It was built by the pioneering Maxwell family and is now a historic relic. It has been stabilised and is protected behind a high wire fence. A creek between the hut and the campground should provide good drinking water for campers.

We had lunch nearby, sitting in the sun. Then we began our ascent up Kedumba Pass. We had intended to climb up the Goat Track Pass, which neither of us had been up – but the turn off  was not obvious and we missed it. As we climbed – we found ourselves in the strong cold wind once more.

Above Kedumba Pass, we deviated off the road and cut across the creek, taking a short-cut to the Kings Tableland Road. This was a bit scrubby in places but misty OK and certainly saved a lot of road bashing, and it didn’t take us too long to reach Bob’s car parked near the Lion Head track.
