Bola Creek – Fungi and Slime Moulds – 21 March 2019

This was an interesting and rewarding day where I was joined by Digi Dave. We headed down to Bola Creek in Royal National Park with our cameras.

Hyphomycetes

Like Ferndale Park, the day before, not a huge amount of fungi was out, but what we did find was interesting. And we also found quite a few slime moulds.

Here is some of the fungi –

One very interesting species we had found the previous year seemed to be quite abundant. It is probably abundant during all the fungi season, but you need to know what to look for and where to look. It is a very tiny blue fungus called Mycena lazulina. It grows at Bola Creek on the fronds of the Cabbage Palms – once they have fallen off the trees and are rotting on the ground. To see it, you really need a hand lens. To photograph it, you really need an ultra macro lens.

It is also bioluminescent. Here is a photo of a small sample I took home and photographed after dark –

More photos together with identifications are online here on my website.
