Comet Spotting

The last month or two has been a good time to look for comets.

Two have been visible. Comet Lemmon has been quite faint – but I managed to photograph it on a vey dark night with clear sky at Newnes on the Friday evening of a canyoning trip. I didn’t know I had photographed it till I got home and looked at my photos on a monitor.

More recently I have been looking at Comet PanSTARRS. I was surprised to find that this was easily visible from local locations in Sydney with the aid of binoculars. It also was very easy to see in photos.

Later in the year, Comet Ison should be visible. It may perhaps be very bright indeed.
