South Head, Watsons Bay to Dover Heights Walk – 13 May 2018

I completed a short walk from Watsons Bay, out to South Head and back and then along the coastal path from The Gap to Dover Heights. The weather was not that good for a longer walk – there was some rain around. But not that frequent and quite light.

I had a pleasant ferry trip to Watsons Bay, and then proceeded along roads to Camp Cove and the start of the track to South Head.

I walked out to Hornby Lighthouse and back, seeing a few honeyeaters on the way.

I then walked back to Watsons Bay and to The Gap. I climbed up to the highest lookout and looked for whales for a while – without any success.

So I then continued along the Coastal Path, past the signal station and the lighthouse. I was on the lookout for raptors and whales – but on this trip I had no success at all.

On previous trips I had seen a family on Nankeen Kestrels at Diamond Bay. Perhaps this time they were sheltering from rain?

At Dudley Page Reserve a brief storm hit. It only rained for a few minutes and I was able to shelter in the lee of a building.

I then walked back to the coastline and along the grassy Rodney Reserve. This is a place I had seen Peregrine Falcons. Not on this trip, nor any whales. All I saw were a few gannets out fishing.

Further along the coast I could see a strange solar power building under the cliffs – perhaps a hermits shack?

From there it was a short walk to a bus stop and a bus to Bondi Junction Station.
