Herons and a Darter – Cooks River Birds – 27 March 2018

I spent a pleasant few hours down on the Cooks River photographing some of the birds. I cycled down to the river and roads along to the Boat Harbour and then to the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands. I didn’t see too many birds out, so slowly cycled back towards home on the other side of the river.

I was almost at Wardell Road – my return  home route, when I spotted a Darter drying its wings on a perch. So I parked my bike and started taking a few photos. I kept still and quiet.

It then decided to take off and fly away. I was ready for this with my camera and was able to capture and good sequence of shots as it flew down the river.

Then, nearby, I noticed a White Faced Heron wading in shallow water. I stayed quiet and still and watched it. It was hunting for food. I was lucky to see it find a few mud crabs and other things.

It was not nice to see it find a plastic bag!

One small crab escaped, but it was soon recaptured and eaten.

I then headed back to the Boat Harbour and spotted a Striated Heron on the mudflats. It saw me and ran off to hide under a mangrove. I stayed still, and sure enough, it came back out. I was then able to watch it hunt for food for the next twenty minutes.

During this time, some pelicans landed nearby and some magpie larks were flying about.
