Tasmania – Mt Field National Park – 5 March 2018

After completing our walk along the Western Arthurs, we spent the night at Mt Field National Park (at the Hotel). The next morning we drove to New Norfolk to drop off Colin for his bus back to Hobart. After a visit to the laundromat we headed back to Mt Field National Park.

We set up camp at the camping area near the National Park visitor centre, and then spent the rest of the day on a nice walk. We started off from the visitor centre and first went to Russell Falls.

Russell Falls

It had been very dry and the flow was low – so the falls were not that spectacular. Horseshoe Falls not far upstream were better even with their low flow.

We next followed a track to the Tall Trees Walk. The trees – Swamp Gums (Eucalyptus regnans) were indeed very tall. One we saw was 79 m tall according to a sign. It also said they can grow to nearly 100 m tall – making them the tallest flowing plants in the world.

Next, we walked down to Lady Barron Falls. These are in a different creek which had more flow.
