Kiama Coast Walk – Gerringong to Kiama Section – 28 June 2017

The Kiama Coast is a very pleasant place to walk – and it is very good that there is a track along the coast that provides access for walkers. I did this section of the track last year, but on that occasion it was very windy, and I missed a lot I think. I was also keen to see some whales.

I caught the train to Gerringong and walks from the station to the north wend of were Beach via roads. Last trip I walked along the sand of the beach which was a bit tedious. At the outlet of Werri Lagoon, I took my shoes and socks off and waded across. I don’t remember having to do this on the previous trip.

The track starts properly from the north side of the lagoon outlet and it is well marked and signposted. The coastal scenery is quite dramatic with coastal cliffs and waves crashing on rock platforms below.

The geological aspects are also very interesting. There are a lot of volcanic features  – lava flows, dykes, columnar jointing, blowholes, sea caves and sea stacks.

And there were whales to look out for. I did see quite a few – but they were a long way out to sea. But the birds were closer. The highlight was a sea eagle that circled overhead for a look.

One of the more interesting features that you can observe is a sea stack. You initially see it a long way off from the south. It looks impressive. But you have to remember roughly where it is, because it is not visible from the track as you walk past. You need to leave the track and walk through thick grass to the top of the cliffline. From above the view is very spectacular.

When you return to the track, and continue to walk north you get no more views of it. So if walking from the north then you would not know it was there. I have looked online and haven’t been able to find a name for this sea stack. I used my drone near the stack to get a short video that you can watch –

As I walked north, a storm was approaching. Luckily it held  off till I reached the streets of Kiama. Then it was the train home.

More photos are online on my website here.
