Lane Cove Valley – Fungi and Orchids – 17 June 2016

Following my walk down Wolli Creek, the next day I did a similar walk down the Lane Cover River. I started at Thornleigh and walked down the Great North Walk track to the De Burgh Bridge, then crossed the river and walked down the Riverside Track to Porters Creek then back along roads to Macquarie Park Station.

And like the day before, I found a medium amount of fungi and also orchids out. But unlike Wolli Creek I spotted no waxcaps and the orchids were mainly different. I saw only one Greenwood Orchid, but found quite a few Acanthus fornicatus orchids in several spots.

It looked like there had been a major flood down the river during the big storms. The banks were covered in a lot of debris in places. This may have also watched out some of the fungi.

Early on my walk, I noticed a lot of white blobs on the ground. Closer inspection showed they were furry in appearance. So not slime moulds. Perhaps a type of mould?

Also, some of the fungi where quite strange ones that I could not recall seeing before. Perhaps  Hydnellum sp or Craterellus sp? I will try and find out more about them. Some were brown and some were grey  and some were white.

I also found quite a few holes that had been dug in the soft ground. These are usually indicative of bandicoots. They dig for truffles. One hole I found was quite deep however – perhaps 30 cm deep. Would bandicoots did a hole that deep?
