Blue Mountains – Canyons and a Walk – 26-27 January 2016

Wendy had organised two days of canyoning in the Blue Mountains. Digi Dave and myself joined her. On the first day, Jan was also along. As the weather forecast was for cool and wet weather, we chose some drier canyons. As it turned out, on the second day we thought is was too cold for canyoning so we went to Medlow Bath for a walk.

The two canyons we visited on the first day were The River Caves and then Deep Pass Canyon.

The River Caves

We walked down the track to the top of the canyon. Once in the canyon we took our time walking through it. I think I walked down it and back up it twice – taking photos as I went. We had lunch in a nice cave at the bottom end of the canyon.

The River Caves is a short canyon, but it is very pretty and well worth spending a fair bit of time in.

We returned to the cars via the track at the top end and then headed to Deep Pass.

Deep Pass Canyon

We walked down to Deep Pass Clearing and then walked up to the lower end of the canyon. We then climbed up all the small waterfalls to the top of the canyon. Again we moved slowly allowing plenty of time to take photos.

After the canyon we walked back to the carpark and then headed off to camp.

Medlow Bath Walk

Our original intention was to visit Dargans Creek Canyon, but it was quite a cold day, so we instead  wet to Medlow Bath and walked to the Coliseum. This is a large amphitheatre at the base of the cliffs. To get to is, we went down the steep Sentinel Pass. This is an old walking track that is still in quite good condition. Out route was from Belgravia Street to Tuckers Lookout, down Sentinel Pass, then around the base of the cliffs to the Coliseum.

From the Coliseum, we continued on, descending down old steps along Murphys Track. This is a well benched track that goes back around to the bottom of Sentinel Pass. It is zoo well benched and has an easy gradient that we speculated that it was perhaps used for packhorses some time in the past.
