Book Review – Wild Swimming Sydney

I was recently sent a copy of this book by the publisher, and I am happy to review it here. It looks like this is the first Australian book in a series that was started in England and with other titles in Europe. The series not only covers swimming sites but also cycling, running and other outdoor activities.

WildSwimming

This is a very attractive book, with lots of photos of great looking swimming holes in lovely locations in the greater Sydney area. It attractiveness is made more so by recent warmer weather and the coming summer. The photos tempt and entice you to head out and visit these places.

The authors, Sally Tertini and Steve Pollard, have done a great job researching and then checking out a huge number of locations. More than 250 wild pools are described, with notes about their attractiveness, seclusion and how to get to them. Some of the pools described are mentioned as being suitable for camping or safe for young children. Good advice. And there is a range of pools that should suit a wide variety of people. Some that are very accessible by public transport, some reached only by cars, some reached by a short or long walk. The pools include salt water rock pools along the coast – natural pools and man made rock pools, and many fresh water pools in creeks and rivers.

I was surprised at some of the pools included – as some are quite obscure, and perhaps only known to locals. This is a good book to have if you want to get out and explore some great places to cool off on a hot day.
