Cooks River Bird Photos – 15 January 2015

I took a set of photos along the Cooks River on 15th January. I started at the Tempe Wetlands and then rode my bike along the cycleway to the wetlands at Cup and Saucer Creek. I finished off along the Cooks River nearer to Wardell Rd.

When I arrived at Tempe Wetlands I thought I saw a kingfisher. I unpacked my camera and then looked back up – I could not see the bird again. All I could see in that area were some willie wagtails. I then doubted that I had actually seen a kingfisher. But I would spot it on a later visit.

The two wetlands were good to observe baby birds. I saw plenty of juvenile swamphens and moorhens. It was a very warm day and a lot of cicadas were out and also many dragonflies were hovering above the ponds. Good food for the birds.

The Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands are composed of three ponds on different levels. The water is diverted from the creek into the top pond, then into the middle pond and then into the third pond before flowing back, a lot purer into the creek. It was interesting this time to see the middle pond almost drained. I wonder if this was done intentionally?

On my way back along the Cooks River Cycleway – a saw a large group of cormorants swimming in the river behind some mangroves. There must have been at least 20 of them. At home I looked up the relevant collective noun for cormorants – a “gulp”.
