Aussie Bird Count on the Greenway – 19 October 2021

My friend Chuin Nee had requested my aid to help her son Jasper with his school assignment which involved taking part in the Aussie Bird Count. I suggested the Greenway, as I knew the birds along there pretty well and it was close for them to get to.

Jasper did very well, spotting birds and was quick to learn new species. We did 3 twenty minute surveys, one at Taverners Hill Light Rail Station, one on the Greenway Path below the station and one in the park near Hawthorne Canal. Jasper entered all the results into his iPad.

Chuin Nee and Jasper

Here are some of the birds we saw –

Little Corellas

Red Wattlebird

Superb Fairy-wren

Laughing Kookaburra

Noisy Miner

Australian White Ibis

Willie Wagtail

In the park we visited the White-faced Heron nest. The two chicks look almost ready to fledge.

Crested Pigeon

Masked Lapwing

And we saw the Bee Hive on the nesting box.

Rain had been forecast for the day, but it had been a pleasant rain free morning.

  1. JG says:

Boat Harbour Tawnies. It looks like the chick(s) hatched today. Male very fidgety, picking below his body all the time. Nest is higher than last week and male sits high on nest. Did not have binoculars and could not see chick, but the timing is right. Other people also thought same.
