Photographing the Moon

I recently attempted to photograph the moon during a total lunar eclipse. Unfortunately, here in Sydney, we had a fairly cloudy night. I went outside a number of times to see what conditions were like. At one time a few small breaks in the clouds seemed to be coming over – so I tried taking a few photographs.

Here is one of the moon during the total part of the eclipse on 8 October 2014 –

Moon1

The details are – ISO 1600, 400 mm, f5.6 1/4 sec, tripod

For comparison here is photo I took of the full moon during a “super moon” on 10 August 2014 –

Moon2

The details are – ISO 200, 400 mm , f8 1/800 sec, hand held

It is interesting that the difference in ISO and exposure is 10 stops or factor of 1024 times different between the 2 moons.
