Sassafras Gully in Springwood – 4 September 2014

I had another afternoon in Springwood, and chose to walk around the Sassafras Gully loop. It had been raining and I was hoping the creeks would be up. They were, but not by too much, but things were still very nice.

I started from the track behind the shops that goes down to Fairy Dell. I then continued down along Magdala Creek. This is a pleasant creek that goes in and out of patches of rainforest. The creek bed is also interesting with small waterfalls and pools. In the non-rainforest sections, wildflowers were beginning to come out.

Lower down the creek are two waterfalls – Magdala Falls and Martins Falls. I didn’t try to photograph them as the water levels were not that high.

When I arrived at the Perch Ponds at the junction with Glenbrook Creek it started to rain a little. A nuisance – making me put my camera away in my pack, but also the rain freshened up all the ferns and rocks. I didn’t complain. Oh, and the ferns, very nice!

I would have like to spend more time near the creek bed of Glenbrook Creek. There are some interesting boulder and rapid sections that are lower down and not close to the track. Probably worth exploring?

By the time I arrived at the swimming hole at the junction of Glenbrook Creek and Sassafras Creek, the rain had stopped. This is a nice place with a lot of interesting slabs and runnels in the creek bed. Back out with the camera and tripod.

I had planned to walk out via the Victory Track to Faulconbridge, but time was running short and the rain and started again, so I left by the very nice track that goes up to Sassafras Gully Road in Springwood.
