Climbing at Thompsons Point, Nowra – and a visit to the local zoo – 9 – 10 August 2014

John and Chuin Nee had invited me to go climbing with them at Thompsons Point at Nowra. It helps to have a third person – so one of us can look after their young son Jasper.

The weather was perfect – and we and a nice drive down through Wollongong to Nowra, with a pitt stop at Berry. We then drove out to Thompsons Point.

We started at the far end of the crag, and ended up spending the day at that end.

Later in the afternoon, our friends, Su Li, Brent and Steffy, arrived at the crag – but they climbed closer to the near end. We met up at the carpark, when it got dark, and then headed off to have dinner in North Nowra.

We camped at our usual campground at Nowra – at the Animal Park. This is a small friendly place, next to the large caravan park, and it doesn’t seem to mind climbers arriving late and paying for their tent sites the next morning.

I spent most of the Sunday with John and Jasper at the Shoalhaven Zoo, which is right at the Animal Park – very convenient. The others headed back to Thompsons Point.

The Zoo was actually very good – and a great place for small children. Jasper had a great time. As well as seeing the animals we went on a rainforest adventure walk which was quite challenging for Jasper with its ladders.

Jasper had the chance to pat koalas, wombats, crocodiles and feed llamas. But I think he most enjoyed meeting Harry, the talking bird.

After lunch at the Animal Park cafe, we headed back to meet the others at Thompsons Point. They were all climbing on some newly developed sectors (and here) right past the usual far end. They seemed to find plenty of good climbs.
