Coastal Walking – Milsons Point to Bondi Walk – 21 May 2014

Previously I had walked from Manly to Milsons Point and I had been along the coast from Bronte to Bondi Beach and from Bronte to La Perouse. I thought it would be a good time to do another section – from Milsons Point to South Head and then see how much more time I had for more.

My route followed the line marked on the map from the Walking Coastal Sydney Website. I had also downloaded an app that had the map on it – and this made it easy to stay on course – looking at my position on the map.

I got up early and caught a train to Milsons Point and then start walking over the Harbour Bridge. I had arrived before sunrise. As I walked over the Bridge , the sun did rise, but it did so behind a big cloud mass, so there were no low rays. When it did pop out from the clouds, it was too bright for good photography, but it was still nice, and promised a good day.

On the Bridge at this time of the morning are a few walkers and lots of joggers. The crowd of runners continued right around the Opera House and beyond.

It was nice walking through the Botanic Gardens and then round the next bay to Garden Island. Here, the route follows roads for a while and then you drop down to the parks of Rushcutters Bay.

More nice walking and then a few more roads to Rose Bay. Then there is a short section of shops (time for morning coffee), more roads and a nice section of foreshore walk to Neilson Park.

The next section, a short section of roads, takes you to a suspension bridge over Parsley Bay and then to Watsons Bay.

After this, a little more bushland, around Green Point, a site of one end of a World War II torpedo barrier, and the small Camp Cove. Now I was almost at South Head.

It is an out and back track to the Horny Lighthouse with a small loop on the end. Beautiful views and a lot of nice birdlife, but the bush is pretty degraded. Lots of weeds.

Back to the north end of Camp Cove and along a road to The Gap. Here my app was a bit out – I couldn’t seem to find the start of the track that took you to the viewpoint to the north above The Gap. So I ended up doing this section in reverse. Great views of the sea cliffs! From The Gap, the route continues on a walkway along the top of the cliffs towards Dover Heights. Continued good views. This was where I stopped for lunch. As I rested, I looked, without success for whales.

Next, was a short section of roads to Diamond Bay, then more spectacular cliffs and a walkway close to them. Nice!

Then more roads, but they go past Dudley Page Reserve, which has brilliant views of the city and harbour. Then back to the cliff tops through some grassy parks.

The last part of the walk is along roads – all downhill to Bondi Beach.

More photos of the walk are on my website here.
