Mt Solitary Traverse – 22 – 23 March 2014

Wendy had organised this walk. We left one car at the barrier at the top of Kedumba Pass and the other at the Golden Stairs on Narrow Neck.

We then set off – down the Golden Stairs and along Federal Pass track to the Ruined Castle. We climbed to the top of the castle and admired the fine views – particularly of Mt Solitary.

Lots of other walkers were out. Daywalkers and walkers with larger packs intending to camp on Mt Solitary.

We climbed up onto the mountain and found a nice shady spot on the way for lunch. As we arrived at Chinamans Gully – a thunderstorm hit us – we sat the storm out in one of the caves. Scouts setting up their camp nearby were enjoying themselves having a tomato fight! The storm passed over quickly, and we then resumed our walk – and headed to Singa-Jinga-Well Creek which was a lot quieter.

Storm!

More storms were passing over. But they seemed to miss us as we were cooking our dinner. Later on, just as we went to bed – another storm hit. Heavy rain fell as we dozed off.

Dawn was not too special and our breakfast was interrupted by a stream of mountain runners passing by.

We packed up and then headed to the Col and the steep descent down to Kedumba Creek.

We had lunch part way up the climb out and then we had more climbing up the road where it has been blasted out of the cliffs back up to the car at the barrier.

After a cool ale at The Grand View Hotel, we headed back up to Katoomba and back along Narrow Neck to pick up the other car. On the way we stopped and checked out the pink flannel flowers. Most of the flowers were well past their prime – but some were still out.
