Wollangambe Canyon – 8 March 2014

Su Li had organised a weekend of canyoning. Our objective for the first day was to visit a part of Wollangambe Canyon.

On the way up the mountains, we decided to do the “Greg” Section, or “Lower Tourist” section of the canyon. So we park at the Cathedral of Ferns Campground and set off down the fire road for the canyon. Once we arrived at the Wollangambe River, we inflated lilos and set off down the canyon. On lilos were Su Li, Brent, Dave W and myself, and swimming was Rob.

The water level was up a bit after recent rain, and this meant that we did not have to paddle so hard, which was good.

We proceeded past the first waterjump and then passed a party at one of the exits for Why Don’t We Do It In The Road Canyon. It was here that I had a lilo mishap – with the strong current, we were tempted to lilo down all the rapids – and on one of them my lilo got spronged – probably by a sharp rock. Nasty! This is the first time I had punctured a lilo for many, many years….. This would mean that unless I climbed out of he canyon, I would have to swim all the way! Now – if I got too tired or too cold swimming, then I could have climbed out where I got the puncture, at the exit track, or at Why Don’t We Do It In The Road Canyon itself (its an easy climb out from a short way up the canyon), or lower downstream at the Whungee Wheengee exit – so I wasn’t too worried. And I did have a springsuit on and the water was not too cold – and I could use my pack for buoyancy. But it did make it harder to pull over and take photos.

As it turned out the canyon was very nice – but I sure was tired when we reached the end of the Greg Section, just downstream from the Waterfall of Moss side canyon.
