Wolli Creek Fungi – 7 April 2018

This visit to Wolli Creek was a field activity of the Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc. It was open to members of the group as well as members of the Wolli Creek Preservation Society.

We met at 10 am at Girrahween Park and after an introduction, we divided into two groups – one going downstream and the one I was in going upstream. Each group then searched for fungi. When found, some of it was photographed and some specimens collected for examination later.

With more time, and  lot more people looking, we all found a lot more fungi than I had seen by myself a few days earlier. This was despite quite warm and dry conditions in the lead up.

Here are some of what our group found –

And we found several occurrences of the same species of slime mould –

Our group found two lots of this same slime mould about 1 km apart, and the same species was also seen and collected by the downstream group.

Back at Girrahween Park, we paused for lunch and then examined what we had found. One member Pam, gave us a masterclass in Boletes and Russulas by sectioning specimen, looking for colour changes and then seeing how if they changed colour when reacted to certain chemicals.

More photos are online here on my website.
