Manly to The Spit Walk – 5 February 2018

This was a very pleasant walk along a nice part of Sydney Harbour. It was organised by Brian Everingham for the National Parks Association of NSW. On the walk was Brian, Chris, Mary, Maureen, Mary 2, Derek, Roy and myself.

After a trip from the Quay to Manly in the ferry, we set off along the foreshore.

Early on we noticed a family of Crested Terns –

The first part of the walk follows a coastal path to Fairlight Beach and then to Forty Baskets Beach. A beautiful section of the coast, popular with local walkers, joggers and dogs out walking with their carers.

The harbour was also busy – with many boats plying their trade. We also observed several warships leaving the harbour.

The best part of the walk is where the track enters the Sydney Harbour National Park at Dobroyd Head. Sydney is lucky to have this very good remnant bushland so close to the city.

Further around, we made short side trip to the Grotto Point Lighthouse.

And then we continued along, past some small beaches towards Clontarf. We found a nice shady table in the park there for lunch.

Then the last part to the Spit Bridge. The bridge looks very close, but there are still two bays to walk around. But the walking is still pleasant, especially through a patch of recent rainforest that was packed with a healthy population of Water Dragons.

Then across the Spit Bridge to the bus stop on the far side, and a bus back to the city.

More photos from this walk are online here on my website.
