Hole in the Wall Canyon – 28 January 2018

This was the third canyon I visited with Albert over the long weekend. The Sunday was a cooler day and it started out with some light rain. But overall it turned out to be a good day for canyoning photography.

We packed up from our campsite at Mt Wilson and drove out to the carpark on the Waratah Ridge to start our trip. There were quite a few cars there – no doubt due to Wollemi National Park being closed due to numerous bushfires. So quite a few canyons were visiting Blue Mountains National Park instead.

On the 90 minute walk to the start of the canyon, we met a group of friends walking out. They were returning from a multiday to some of the remote canyons in the Bungleboori Creek area.

We also met another group of four visiting the canyon. We swapped leads with them a few times during the day.

The canyon itself was very beautiful. We were lucky – the cloud cover meant we had reasonably soft lighting in the canyon.

Here are some more photos from the upper constriction –

At the lower constriction, we ended up going through the tunnel. To go through is optional. It is far easier to go over the top – an easy scramble. Going through was a struggle as we were weighed down with cameras and tripods. If you want to see the glow worms, then it is better to go into the first section of the tunnel, see the best of the glow worms and then retreat out the same way and go over the top.

And one taken in the North Branch of Bungleboori Creek on the way out to the exit pass –

Nice to see these places unspoiled 25 years on, I remember a fair bit of quicksand on the one trip through here in the 90’s
