Birds at Tempe Wetlands and the Cooks River – 13 January 2018

It was the second Saturday on the month so I joined the Tempe Birdos for their monthly bird survey at Tempe Wetlands and Reserve.  I then headed up the Cooks River to look for the tawny Frogmouth chicks one again.

We soon spotted an Oriole fly to a tree and grab a cicada and then fly back with it to another tree to eat it –

Olive Backed Oriole 9with cicada)

Here are some of the other birds we spotted at the Wetlands –

Great Egret

Superb Fairy Wren

Red Wattlebird

Australasian Figbird

White Plumed Honeyeater

Black Faced Cuckoo Shrike

Silvereye

I then joined the tempe Birdos for morning tea at Tempe Reserve.

After morning tea, I cycled along the Cooks River to the Dog Area to see if I could spot the tawny Frogmouth chicks. This day I had more success! I saw one chick straight away and hiding around the other side of its parent was the other chick –

As before, the other parent was roosting a few metres away –

I finished off with a quick visit to the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands. One of the turtles was sitting on its usual rock –

Great photos. I finally got to go and check out Tempe and Landing Lights Reserve on Sunday after being inspired by your reports. They didn’t disappoint. Picked up my first Black Winged Stilts and had some good views of the Great Egret. For such small reserves there’s some great diversity.
