North Head Walk – 9 November 2017

After a nice ferry ride to the Zoo, the day before, I thought that another ferry trip would be pleasant. So I caught the ferry to Manly and then set out to walk around North Head.

From  the Ferry terminal, I walked up the main street to Manly Beach, and then off on the Coastal Path to Shelly Beach. This short section is rather urban walking but there are often lizards and birds to see –

I then climbed up to the lookout above the beach and continued through the National Park towards the old barracks. Along the way a lot of wildflowers were out, and a few birds.

At the barracks, I took the track through the hanging swamp and then eventually to the Lady Fairfax Lookouts. Unfortunately, a lot of the observation points are closed off for safety reasons (Possible unstable cliffs?) – so the views are not as good as they might be.

Near the lookout was a nice White-browed Scrubwren –

An then a little later I spotted a Horsfield’s Bronze Cuckoo –

I had lunch at one of the lookouts and the continued to the North Fort and along a track past the cemetery back towards the barracks. before the barracks I turned off and walked down towards a main road. On a trip, about two years earlier, I had seen a few clusters of orchids here – and sure enough they were out again.  Large Tongue Orchids –

From there, I walked to Collins Beach and then back to the Ferry Terminal. A nice day out.
