Birds at the Cooks River and Barton Park – 5 November 2017

This was supposed to be a bushcare day at Barrenjoey, but it was called off due to rain. Later in the day, the rain had eased off a lot, so I rode my bike down to the Cooks River to see what birdlife was out.

I started up the river at the Boat Harbour and spent some time watching the Pelicans.

Bombs away!

I spotted an adult Tawny Frogmouth up in its nest, but this time no sign of any chicks.

There was a nice White Faced Heron and a Great Egret around –

At the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands, it was interesting to watch a group of Dusky Moorhen chicks being fed. The adult birds were scooping up green algae and then feeding the young birds. I watched a pair of babies being fed by at least three different adults birds. Perhaps they are communally fed?

Here are a few more birds in that locality –

I then set off down the river, heading to the Landing Lights wetland at Barton Park. Not a real lot of birds around on the day. I did photograph the usual Black Winged Stilts.

Around the hinterland, I spotted quite a few Superb Fairy Wrens. Always nice to photograph in their breeding plumage.

And one more Egret on the way home near Tempe –
