Wolli Creek – Fungi, Flying Foxes and Birds – 11 May 2017

I spent a pleasant few hours wandering along the Two Valleys Track down Wolli Creek. I started at Bexley North and went to a little below Turrella Reserve before exiting via Turrella Station.

I was looking for fungi, but there was not a real lot out, so I also photographed some of the birds and flying foxes along the way.

Near Girrahween Park at Earlwood, I did find a few waxcaps – some Hygrocybe austropratensis. But I was pleased to find a small cluster of very small red waxcaps lower down near the Flying Fox area.

Also near the flying fox camp, I saw a Brush Turkey. This is the first time I have seen one in the valley.

Further down the valley, I went down to the area below the old quarry near the M5 Exhaust Tower. Not much out – but a fresh cluster of Hygrocybe austropratensis was emerging there. I counted at least a dozen in a very small area. That was nice.

Here are some more photos –

More photos are online on my website.

We also saw (the same?) brush turkey on our regular walk through the valley on Sunday 23rd July 2017 at the same location (about 10.30am). Like you, we had never seen one in the valley before.
