More Waterfall Walking at Leura and Wentworth Falls – 17 March 2017

On this day I travelled by train to Leura, and then walked won the Mall to the turn off to Lyrebird Dell. At the time, it was quite misty with on and off light rain. Once on the walking track down to the Dell, it was quite eerie and beautiful in the forest with the mist.

Lyrebird Dell Falls

The waterfall at Lyrebird Dell was flowing nicely and I stopped an took a few photos.

I continued on along the track through very beautiful Mountain Ash forest to arrive at The Pool of Siloam. The is another delightful spot, particularly so after rain. More photography.

I then left the valley, climbing up he track to Gordon Falls Lookout. At the lookout, i was so misty that there was no view of the falls, so I continued along the Prince Henry Track that goes along the cliffs all the way to Katoomba. But, a short way along, the mist shows signs of clearing, so I retraced my steps back to the lookout and was rewarded by grief views of not only Gordon Falls but also the next waterfall to the east – the very intermittent Lindeman Falls.

The mist closed back in, and I walked on along the Prince henry Walk. It was not worth stopping at any of the lookouts but the forest was very nice in the mist.

I continued to Leura Cascades. This was nice for photography with a good flow of water and the mist creating nice soft lighting.

I had originally intended to descend down to the base of Leura Falls, but it was so misty that I would have had no views of the waterfalls, so I walked back up the track to the Upper Cascades. Again there was a reasonable flow and nice subdued lighting for photos.

I then took the walking track to Leura, and then back to the station. It was still early, so I caught a train to Wentworth Falls. I would have enough time to visit Water Nymphs Dell north of the railway line. A place I had never been to.

Water Nymphs Dell Falls

This walk starts a short way down the road that follows the railway line heading towards Bullaburra. The track goes behind some hoses and then descends through forest to a nice patch of rainforest. This is Water Nymphs Dell. It was then a shot walk to the waterfall at the head of the dell. During typical conditions I think the flow of this waterfall would disappoint. On my visit the waterfall was most attractive.

The track continued in a long cave behind the waterfall and then to an old wooden picnic table. This was also protected by the cave and is in good condition. Many of these waterfall walks seem to have picnic tables that have rotted away.

The track continued around the side of the dell and then climbed up to the streets to the north. From there it was another short walk back to the station. As I arrived the rain started heavily again.

More photos from these two very pleasant excursions are online on my website – here for Leura Waterfalls and here for Water Nymphs Dell.
