More Sassafras Gully Fungi – 6 August 2016

With the fungi season drawing to a close I wanted to visit Sassafras Gully at least one more time to see if any more waxcaps (members of the family Hygrophoraceae) were out. So far the season has been fairly poor for waxcaps at Sassafras Gully. Well! This trip was a big improvement. I found a lot of colourful waxcaps out – but I did have to search for them.

On this trip, I did my usual walk – in at Sassafras Gully Road – down Sassafras Gully to Glenbrook Creek, then out via Magdala Creek and fairly Dell. Mots of the good fungi was in Sassafras Gully close to the junction of the Wiggins Track or fairly high up in Magdala Creek.

Here are some more of the waxcaps that I saw –

So far this season, this was my fifteenth trip to Sassafras Gully to photograph the fungi. It was also probably my best trip.

More photos with identifications can be found on my website starting at this page.

    Hi David,

    Some nice shots mate.
Are you using a dedicated macro lens for these?

I’ve just recently started to get into shooting fungi myself.
I’ll have to explore this area as its basically my backyard – I’m about 15mins walk from Magdala Gully via a side gully.

    Cheers,
    Vic.

Thanks Vic for your comments. Yes – a dedicated Macro lens (90 mm) was used for these photos. And a tripod, but no flash. Some I used a small reflector/diffuser. I have a webpage on my site on fungi photography, and it shows a photo of my setup (except I am using a newer macro lens now).

Magdala Ck can be good for fungi – between the first and third creek crossings is the best zone (there are 9 crossing on the way to Glenbrook Ck). But, the fungi season is more or less over for this year (it can last from January to August – and especially after rain). But a few odd things pop up still.
