Lane Cove – Chatswood Fungi – 21 July 2016

I did a nice walk from Macquarie Park to Chatswood to look for and photograph fungi. I started out from Macquarie Park Station, then entered Lane Cove National Park, walked down to Porters Creek, then headed back upstream along the Riverside Track to the De Burgh Bridge, over the bridge and downstream along the Great North Walk Track to the National Park Visitor Centre. Next under Fullers Bridge and to Chatswood via Ferndale Park.

Along the way I found a fair bit of nice fungi. It had rained the day before and the side creek were up. One was tricky to cross – the one on the Great North Walk, just downstream from the De Burgh Bridge.

At Porters Creek I was happy to find, what we think to be some Gliophorus psittacinus var. psittacinus, the Parrot Waxcap out. I had seen this very nice fungus in exactly the same spot last year and it had also been seen there a few years earlier by Ken Beath, another fungi photographer. This very viscid fungus starts off a green colour and gradually changes to orange.

Later on the other side of the Lane Cove River, there is a short rainforest section where the track is below a cliff just above the river. Here, like last year I found a small group of Hygrocybe anomola out.

There was also some other nice fungi out along the river –

I stopped for lunch at one of the picnic tables near the visitor centre, then continued on up the track to Ferndale Park. A lot of nice fungi was out after the rain, including a nice colony of Hygrocybe griseoramosa, a rather rare waxcap and a huge number of green waxcaps of two species.

On the way to Chatswood Station, I also spotted again the Birds Nest Fungi growing in the Kenneth Slessor Reserve.
