Tempe Wetlands – 12 March 2016

I went down to Tempe Wetlands early on Saturday morning to join the Tempe Birdos for their monthly bird count.

It was interesting wandering slowly around the three pools that make up the wetlands, looking for birds, watching what they were doing, and taking photos where possible.

In the middle pool, we spotted some new chicks – baby Eurasian Coots.

We also spotted a Galah.

A flock of corellas flew overhead, and we spotted some Ibis and some juvenile Red-Browed Finches and quite a few New Holland Honeyeaters.

After the bird count, we went to Tempe Reserve for morning tea. During this, some of the more experienced bird watchers heard some alarm calls from some of the nearby birds. This signalled the presence of a raptor. We looked up, and sure enough spotted a raptor flying over high above. A goshawk or orprey perhaps?

I then wandered back to the wetlands to see if I could get photos of some of the birds we had spotted. This was not that successful – the birds seemed a bit quieter. I did manage to get some photos of some of the many dragonflies hovering around.
