We completed two walks on the South Island -
Young - Wilkin - East Matukituki Valleys via Gillespie and Rabbit Passes (9 days) - from 5 - 13 Jan 2009
Caples - Greenstone Circuit (6 days) - from 15 - 20 Jan 2009
A special thanks to Chuin Nee for all her work dehydrating food and
organising the evening meals and doing all the cooking of the evening
meals - which were all most delicious! And also thanks to John and Rob
for their patience when Chuin Nee and myself were photo-pfaffing (which
happened a lot). And also thanks to DOC for some great tracks and huts.
Photographic note - on these
trips - I went lightweight with the photo gear - only taking a small
(and waterproof) Pentax W60 which was on a cord around my neck while I
was walking (and sitting in a top pocket) and also, in my pack, I had a
small Fujifilm 100fd - which I used for more composed photos. Both
cameras had the same zoom range (28 - 140 mm equivalent) - but the Fuji
was better in low light and probably in other conditions too. I did
miss the flexibility of an SLR - and maybe next time I would take one
(or a compact with more manual options). Anyway - look at the photos
and see what you think. All photos are hand held (with the exception of
a few on the last day of the second walk - where the camera was sitting
on a bridge railing)
