I travelled by train from Munch to Vienna by bus.

Above - Bikeshare

Above - This is the Natural History Museum - I spent a fair bit of time inside this building.

Above - A modern art museum

Above - These stairs look interesting. They led down to an old bomb shelter from WWII

Above - The shelter is now a Museum of Torture. In this tableau - Bakers are lowered into a tank of excrement if they sell an underweight product.

Above - A painful looking chair!

Above - Women who argue were placed in this

Above - Gossips had to wear one of these

Above - People who cheated at cards or dice had to wear this around the city

Above - Witches or heretics were burnt on the stake - but to reduced their suffering - bags of gunpowder would be tied to their necks to make there death quicker. It was thought that fire would not burn innocent people.

Above - Iron maiden

Above - Other methods of punishment

Above - The executioner had a difficult job. Often he was gievn unlimited alcohol the night before he had a job (and so was the victim) - this was to settle his nerves, but this often had the side effect that he he took several blows to remove the victim's head. Or sometimes he missed it completely!

Above - The guillotine. An early model was made completely of wood - even the blade.

Above - Torture in schools. The schoolmaster could administer corporal punishment. Vienna abolished the cane in 1908. A modern replacement torture is detaining the students after school.

Above - Naughty students could be made to sit on the donkey in the corner of the room

Above - At the Natural History Museum. It has an impressive collection of minerals.

Above - And a large collection of jewels.

Above - And meteorites

Above - Fossils

Above - This dinosaur was animatronic - and every few minutes it would suddenly move - and scare people nearby!

Above - The building is impressive

Above - Looks prickly!

Above - A huge collection of beetles

Above - And birds

Above - Here you could see what you would look like as an early human

Above - Me as a Homo erectus

Above - Alarming - the climate change section. Comparison photos - one of many.
